Audio Masterclass Professional Course in Recording Techniques

This is an advanced course and we recommend that students should have already completed at least the Audio Masterclass Music Production and Sound Engineering Course, or be at an equivalent standard in their work.

The way in which this course works is as follows...

Students are given a series of professionally produced multitrack recordings and are asked to replace certain instruments or vocals. In some assignments we ask for a replacement that is close in sound texture and performance to the original. In others we encourage the student to apply a high degree of creativity.

The objectives of the course are firstly to challenge the student to create recordings that are as good as or better than the original example; also to take the student beyond their current 'comfort zone' so that they can expand their personal toolbox of techniques that they can apply to their own work in future.

Practical assignment projects

The course also features twelve practical assignment projects which are assessed by Audio Masterclass leading to an Audio Masterclass certificate on successful completion of the course.

Assignments include...

  • Replacing kick and snare drum
  • Replacing the whole drum set
  • Replacing an acoustic guitar
  • Replacing an electric guitar
  • Replacing a bass guitar
  • Replacing a keyboard
  • Replacing a lead vocal
  • Replacing a harmony vocal
  • Taking a skeleton multitrack with basic instrumentation and adding to it to create a complete, full-sounding production
  • Variations of the above.

Requirements

Equipment and software (as the assignments are flexible, not all instruments are required and can be replaced by other instruments that the student has available):

  • Modern digital audio workstation software such as Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic Pro, Studio One, Digital Performer, Reaper, Ableton Live, or similar.
  • Audio interface with two or more microphone inputs and phantom power
  • Headphone or loudspeaker monitoring
  • Drum virtual instrument, sampler, or the patience to edit drum tracks by hand
  • Acoustic guitar
  • Electric guitar
  • Bass guitar
  • Keyboard instrument (or software instrument)
  • Access to performers and/or singers

IMPORTANT

This course is staged, meaning that each module must be completed before access to the next is available. Modules can be taken at one per week, or at any pace slower than that within the two-year enrollment period.

Please read the above paragraph carefully. We cannot allow any exceptions.
